As we celebrate women this month, let’s focus on our power to advocate for ourselves and other women. That starts with demanding that we educate all the world’s girls.

Everyone can use a fresh start, but support and guidance can be elusive. Here are five organizations working to lend a hand.

The record-setting 118 Congressional seats now held by women in the U.S. House of Representatives have forced the question: Is this the new “Year of the Woman” election? The numbers may play out that way, but the Congresswomen who hold these seats have an immense responsibility to overcome the systemic barriers that have plagued females for generations.

"The kids noted that they had all of these people coming in from around the world to tell their stories and that they could tell their stories better than anybody else," says 32-year-old Justine McGowan, who works as CARE's senior innovation adviser and lives in California. "This enables young people to tell their stories directly, both to each other and to the rest of the world."

We say we care about overhead, but what we really care about is impact, or status, or momentum. What we measure isn’t a simple percentage, it’s a lot deeper than that.

Charlie Grosso, a true renaissance woman, has the unique ability to find a niche in the market that isn't being met—and to fill that void. Cultural competency, optimism, and a vision for facilitating human connection combine to guide Grosso to dream big, but also to execute that dream. Grosso isn't just a dreamer, she's a doer. And when she commits to a project—to a vision—she follows through. Her empathy instinctively drives her to empower other people, through any entrepreneurial venture she embarks on.

"Often times, girls are first in terms of the elements of vulnerability —sexual harassment, sexual attacks, actual human trafficking, sex trafficking, and child marriage — and often last in opportunity, whether that's literally last in line in terms of being able to eat, or last in line in terms of their ability of their family to send them to school," says Michelle Nunn, President and CEO of CARE.

A refugee is defined as a person possessing “a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, [or] membership of a particular social group or political opinion.” This 1951 definition is both prescient in its universality and expresses a deep sense of empathy that seems to be rare in the current political climate. When we think, truly think, haven’t we all seen or known fear at some point? Aren’t we all refugees?

The stories we tell are as important as the funding we commit, says Ana Uzelac of the Clingendael Institute. In Lebanon, she explains, erroneous narratives about refugees limit the ability of donor funding to improve refugees’ well-being in the country.

The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen is a collection of short stories on the refugee experience. Though not specially about the Syrian diaspora, its eloquence and exquisite storytelling is relevant to anyone who wants to get deeper into the greatest humanitarian crisis of our generation. Irrespective if your focus is on Syria, Myanmar, US, Sub-Sahara Africa.

In every crisis country, you will find someone leading refugees in making handicraft in efforts towards building economic independence.

Is this really the best skills to be teaching? Or is it simply the by-product of inherent biases? We need to reexamine how we think about funding nonprofits and what we are willing to support with our dollars; think about how to foster a more equitable society through 21st Century skills and not continue to condemn girls and women in the “pink ghetto.”

3RP Partners are implementing the joint initiative “Support of Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) in Lebanon and enhancing enrollment in it”. This initiative aims to develop a TVET Strategic Paper and Roadmap leading to better linkages with the labour demand market requirements and the aspirations of UNICEF/Lebanon/ Sebastian Rich 18 youth aged 12 - 21 years. It builds on and complements other parallel interventions in place to improve the TVET system in Lebanon as well as mitigate the negative impact of the Syria crisis.
